Cloud economics need a fact base

Compare workload demand, modernisation, commitments and operating costs.

Establish a comparable baseline. Capture current infrastructure, software, support, facilities, resilience, security, labour and planned refresh costs. Separate sunk costs from avoidable future spend and include transition overlap.

Understand the workload economics. Always-on legacy applications, high data egress, oversized instances and poorly governed environments may not benefit from lift-and-shift. Elastic services, modern integration and managed platforms can create value where consumption and operating models change.

Control the commercial risks. Model reservations, licensing rights, vendor escalation, currency, egress, disaster recovery, data residency and exit. Use a three-to-five-year scenario model and identify which savings depend on actual application modernisation.

Make FinOps operational. Assign workload owners, budgets and service-level requirements. Track unit economics, idle resources, commitment coverage and monthly variance; review optimisation alongside resilience and security, not in isolation.
