Expose material cyber risk
Translate control gaps into business interruption, recovery readiness and accountable remediation.

Make the exposure visible to finance. Underfunding is the gap between material business risks and controls demonstrably operating to manage them—not a fixed percentage of IT spend. Start with critical services, revenue dependencies, sensitive information and recovery requirements. Translate plausible incidents into operational interruption, fraud, recovery costs, contractual exposure and customer impact. Use ranges rather than invented breach probabilities.
Measure actual control effectiveness. A policy or dashboard does not establish resilience. Verify identity controls, recoverable backups, privileged access, patching, monitoring and incident response through evidence and testing. Map the most consequential gaps to owners, deadlines and an explicit risk-acceptance authority.
Fund in a disciplined sequence. Address foundational hygiene and known critical weaknesses first; then invest in sector-specific exposure, supplier dependencies, detection and response. Independent testing can validate the assumptions, but remediation and retesting—not the assessment itself—create risk reduction.
Questions for the board. Which critical service cannot be restored within its tolerance? Which high-risk finding has remained open for a quarter? Who accepted that exposure? What evidence supports the next budget request? Which controls would measurably change the outcome of the most plausible scenarios?
Executive takeaway. Approve security spending as a risk-treatment portfolio with accountable milestones, not a collection of tools. Explore Carlavia security advisory. See the related executive insights below.
